Traffic Exchange Marketing

A very popular and easy way to promote yourself, your product or your website online is to use a traffic exchange. There are hundreds of traffic exchanges available, some with tens of thousands of members.

What is a traffic exchange?

When someone visits your website, this is referred to as "traffic". A traffic exchange, or hit exchange, is a place where members visit each others websites . This is usually managed through a credit system. As you surf you earn credits. You can then 'spend' these credits to get visitors to your own site.

Because you earn visitors through surfing, without having to pay out any money, traffic exchanges are a good source of free visitors to your site. While there is no monetary cost, there is a cost in terms of the time you spend surfing. Most traffic exchange also sell traffic as well if you don't want to spend a lot of time surfing to earn credits.

Usually there is a minimum time that you must spend at each site in order to get credited, generally between 6 and 15 seconds. This means you usually only have a few seconds to grab the surfers attention. Because of this, you should use splash pages for best results.

Using splash pages

A splash page is a fast loading web page designed to grab attention and get across a simple message quickly and effectively. A good splash page has an attention grabbing headline and a related graphic to try and get surfers to stop and look.

Having attracted attention, a splash page then has some brief information designed to arouse the surfers curiosity, generally outlining some key problems the surfer may be experiencing and solutions provided by your site. This should be no more than one paragraph. Finally, you ask the surfer to take some action - open your site in a new window, bookmark it, request more information or send you an email.

Even if you don't really know much about HTML or building web pages, there are websites around that will build splash pages (sometimes also referred to as squeeze pages) for you. For example, two of these are TE Toolbox and Instant Squeeze Page Generator. They are both free to join. Building your own pages gives you more flexibility, but these types of programs make the process a lot easier, especially for beginners.
