The name 'advertising exchanges' covers a vast array of different sites which offer advertising in various formats – solos, banners, text ads, html ads, header & footer ads, log in and log out ads etc.

Most will include the option to 'email the list', either by sending a solo ad which may be restricted depending on your membership level ie. free members can only send to free members, while the highest upgrade can send to everyone on the list; or by mailing your downline plus a random number of additional members – read the site's rules to find out who exactly you are sending to.

Almost all offer banner advertising, where you enter the banner url plus target url of the site you are advertising – if you're not sure where to find these, most affiliate sites offer a 'promotion' section where you will find banners to use, either by placing the code on your own website, or by using the url on ad exchanges, which is what I'm describing here!

Text ads, hotlinks, etc are all very similar – you enter some text (the length may be limited) and then a url which people will be sent to when they click – these are well worth setting up, as they tend to get better click-through rates than banners, particularly if the banner you are advertising has been around for a while and everyone knows where they are going to go if they click it! You can make your text ad unique and far more enticing than a well-used banner.

Log in ads will be shown when members log in to the site – sometimes members will get points for viewing the ad for a set length of time, or they may choose to 'skip this ad' – there is no compunction to click the ad, and most sites don't record click-through rates for this type of ad, but they are good for getting exposure to your site. The same applies to log out ads – your ad will be shown but there is no benefit to the member clicking on the ad, unless of course your offer is irresistible!

Some also offer header and footer ads, which are included at the top/bottom of solo ads sent out by members, I've had particularly good results from these ads at EarnersUnite, but the disadvantage of this site is the HUGE number of links you have to click to get enough points to send an ad!

Others, such as YourEZAds, are like a cross between a safelist and a traffic exchange, but instead of showing full pages like a TE does, it shows contextual ads written by members, which when clicked on will take you to their web page. This means your ads have to be good, because other members will only click on your ads if they are interested in what you are offering (or maybe they just want to earn points!) Others again offer a traffic exchange within the site, so you can allocate credits to your sites in the TE, but my experience of these is that the hit rate is slow compared with traditional TEs.

Many ad exchanges offer text and html ads, on some you can only place one ad of each type a day, others offer up to 10 a day, and most will allow you to save up to 10 ads. They only remain active for 24hrs, so you do need to place them regularly to drive any real traffic to your site. The site I am currently getting the best hit rate with for html ads is Ambulance Traffic, and a fairly new site I've joined is showing promise with these and their other advertising – it's called BeyondRealityAdz (and you can still get free JV membership!)

I was recently asked what my preferred method of advertising is.

And my answer? All of them!

I am convinced that you need to use as many different advertising sites and methods as you feasibly can. Then when you've decided which to go for, you need to test them by placing ads and see what your click through rate (ctr) is.

Over the next few posts I'm going to look at some of the different sites and methods I use, and hopefully some of you might leave some feedback about those sites you use, for all of us to benefit from.

Let's start with email marketing – some say this is a hopeless method and email marketing is dead, nobody reads emails any more, spam filters stop all your mail getting through etc. But my tracking shows me that it still gets me hits, and if it gets visitors to your sites, then surely that's worth pursuing? I have certainly found that I still get hits from email marketing, so I continue to use it.

There are different aspects to email marketing – you can use mass mailers or 'blasters' as they are often called, but I gave up using these some years ago as they didn't seem worth the effort. In other words, I didn't get good results with them, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't try them – your ad copy may be better than mine, your product may have a different target audience – all this needs to be taken into account.

Others I know use reverse marketing with some success - this is where you reply to emails sent to you with your own offer (usually dressing it up as showing some kind of interest in their product, but offering yours in return). This can be fairly successful, particularly if you take the right approach and have the courtesy to look at their site in return.

Then there's safelist marketing which I find fairly successful. Again, there are thousands of safelists out there, some with hundreds of thousands of members, others with only a few hundred - these are generally new lists, but shouldn't be dismissed out of hand as the membership may be very responsive and dying to read about your offer.

Safelists often offer other advertising alongside mailing to the main list – banners, text ads, and various other means to get your message out – most of these will be displayed on their site while members are logged in, but some also display their ads on other syndicated sites, so whenever you join a safelist be sure to check out what else they offer and use it if you can (some only offer certain types of advertising to upgraded members).

My most successful to date is European Safelist, which I joined when it was fairly new with only a few hundred members; it now has a membership of over 6000 and growing daily (I enjoy watching the membership increase while I'm on the site – it deserves to do well, lots to offer and great support – blatant plug over lol). Both the list mailings and the banner/text ads have a high click through rate, and the autoresponder (which you get included in the upgraded membership) is simple to use.

Other safelists I like and use regularly are TheTrafficSecret, Adtactics, GlobalSafelist and FreeSafelistMailer.

As well as these traditional (for want of a better word) safelists there is a new breed of lists that has sprung up in 2010, such as StateOfTheArtMailer, AdvertiseFreeForLife & GetTrafficForLife (there are others too). For these to achieve maximum effect though you need to build your own list within the programs, which is something not everyone is very successful at, so some may find them of less worthwhile – you can only mail to a limited number of members on top of your own downline. They do have the advantage of offering other features, such as link creation, where you effectively cloak your links, use these, and earn advertising credits to show ads which you have created on the site.

And that's neatly taken me off the subject of email advertising, so I'll leave it there for now, and look at ad exchanges next time.

Promoting one time and having your downline filled for the
rest of your life may sound impossible, but that is exactly

day is a piece of cake.

When I first started as a network marketer over 3 years
ago, I was made all sorts of promises by my sponsor,
and assured that he would be helping me every step of
